Our Philosophy
Alconbury Weald Church Academy seeks to bring together the best of old and new. We have a wonderful new school site in a vibrant community, but we also want to ensure that our education is grounded in a range of traditions that help give meaning to our lives.
Christian Ethos
We are a Church of England school and proud to be part of a tradition of Anglican education that stretches back centuries. Students do not have to be a Christian to attend our school and we welcome families from all backgrounds and those of all faiths and none. We do not have faith-based admissions.
Our Christian ethos informs the values that inform our daily lives in school, and these are Compassion, Wisdom, Humility and Fortitude.
- Compassion is about love for other people and showing care for those we know and do not know. We want to treat strangers with kindness and not make assumptions about people based on prejudice or preconceptions.
- To show Wisdom is to value knowledge for its own sake and to make decisions based on what we know, including thinking through the unintended consequences of our actions. We will always have an imperfect understanding of the world, so we need to be brave to make decisions based on what we do know.
- Humility involves thinking less of ourselves and more of others. We need to understand that we are not perfect and we all make mistakes. When making decisions, we should seek to place others before ourselves.
- The world can be a challenging place, which is why we need to show Fortitude which is about finding the courage to do the right thing even when (and perhaps especially if) this is not the easiest option available to us.
Academic Ethos
Our school will have a strong academic ethos. What does this mean? What is does not mean is we are an exam factory that exists to do endless exam preparation. although we do think that a strong set of academic qualifications is the best preparation we can give children for the future. Having an academic ethos is rather about valuing knowledge for its own sake. Our world is full of wonderful things and the more we know about the world the more curious we become.
British Values
Our school exists to help prepare children for life on our society and we very much want our students to be active participants in their community. Across the curriculum and embedded in school life are numerous opportunities where we teach children about what it means to be British, including all the debates and disagreements that are part of life in a healthy democratic society.
